A stepped and shaded pattern may be glimpsed at certain angles on the polished lower surface of the brooch, through the diagonal slits which divide its upper surface in four. As Craxford has written: ‘A whole new world is revealed made of reflected light …it is completely enigmatic …One can see it but there is nothing there’.\r\n\r\nOriginally a product designer Craxford switched to jewellery in the early 1970s, training in enamelling and engraving at Central School and The Cass. In 1985 his innovative work in niobium was exhibited in the V&A Jewellery Gallery, from which exhibition a pair of earrings were acquired for the collection. \r\n","physicalDescription":"The pendant consists of a diagonal arrangement of squares: a back panel of brightly-polished silver, above which are fixed four smaller squares each with an engraved square which has been rhodium-plated dark blue and an inner edge of textured silver. These appear to float on the polished backplate which is visible around and between them, and between each is a red spinel set in gold. The reverse of the pendant has a gilded matt surface and a circular suspension loop.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Alan Craxford","id":"A21027"},"association":{"text":"designed and made by","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"Gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"rhodium","id":"x37478"},{"text":"Spinel","id":"x36004"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver with hand-engraving, gilding and rhodium-plating, gold and spinels.","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019LK4861","2019LK4859","2019LK4857"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"46","shelf":"A","box":"5"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pendant","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2017","earliest":"2017-01-01","latest":"2017-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of Jacqueline and Jonathan Gestetner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"60.5","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"60.5","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"9.5","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"AJC\r\nlion passant\r\n925\r\nleopard's head\r\nS\r\n","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pendant, silver with gilding and rhodium-plating, gold and spinels, designed and made by Alan Craxford, England 2017","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.41-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"41","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2018-10-08","availableToBook":false}}
