It is believed to have been a wedding favour for a bridesmaid at a 1887 ceremony. Measuring under 22 cm when opened, it is the right size for a young girl to carry.\r\n\r\nMany of the Museum's adult fans are luxury objects, with unique hand-painted designs and finely carved sticks. They would have been preserved for their beauty and workmanship. This child's fan, which is in fine condition, is a rare survival. It would have been mass- produced, with simply painted wooden sticks and a commercially printed paper leaf. The leaf is further accented with gilding and tiny metal sequins. The romantic scene depicting a shepherdess being politely courted by a well-dressed gentleman would have been appropriate for a bridesmaid's fan.","physicalDescription":"Miniature fan. Paper leaf, gilded and lithographed in vibrant colours with a pastoral 18th-century scene depicting a shepherdess and her suitor, rococo scrolls, accented with small metal spangles. Reverse of leaf in tan paper fleckled with gold leaf. 16 hand-painted wood sticks (including guards).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"gold leaf","id":"x33207"},{"text":"ribbon, silk","id":"x38686"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"spangles","id":"x38420"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithographed paper accented with gilding and spangles, hand-painted wood","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2010EB1169","2010EB1175"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES327319"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 19th century","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Edward Nugée QC","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"opened","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"closed","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"closed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"guard sticks","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This is associated with the wedding of Elizabeth Wroughton Richards to the Reverend Andrew Nugee on 8th August 1854, but might be connected to their son's wedding in 1887.
