The textile chosen by Quant for the blouse is an eye-catching print called ‘Goanna’, designed by renowned Australian textile designer Frances Burke in 1940. This design is typical of Burke’s mid-century modern textiles which often include motifs drawn from Australian flora and fauna, and also motifs inspired by Australian Aboriginal art. The print features horizontal widely spaced wavy lines, interspersed with larger rhombus shapes containing stylized motifs of goanna lizards, tortoises, amoebas, and spirals. Not immediately identifiable as Quant, the playful print, combined with the vivid pink, demonstrates a quirky experimentation with colour and design that would evolve into the graphic, sporty and commercial aesthetic associated with Quant’s brand.
