He has combined three different kinds of patterning with the use of white slip - which fills the rope indentations - and boldly calligraphic underglaze iron painting. As the leading student of Hamada Shoji (1894-1978), Shimaoka is widely regarded as Japan's foremost potter of the Folk Craft (Mingei) Movement. His fascination with rope-impressed decoration is partly due to the fact that his father was a rope-maker. It can also be explained by the proximity to Mashiko, where he lives and works, of numerous archaeological sites dating from the Jomon period (10,500-300 BC), where earthenwares decorated with a rich variety of rope-impressed designs have been found.","physicalDescription":"In this dish where the impressed marks are filled in with white slip, the potter has combined three different patterns with leaf like splashes of underglaze iron painting to give a remarkable feeling of vitality to what is an extremely large and challenging pot.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shimaoka, Tatsuzo","id":"A2386"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"},{"text":"slip","id":"AAT10459"}],"techniques":[{"text":"underglazing","id":"AAT48642"},{"text":"rope-impressed","id":"x37986"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with underglaze iron painting over rope-impressed and slip-filled ground","categories":[{"text":"Access_to_Images 2003","id":"THES48875"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"SCRAN","id":"THES48897"}],"styles":[{"text":"Japanese Folk Craft movement","id":"x37988"},{"text":"Showa","id":"AAT18568"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010EL1553","2006BE6013"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137 (VA)","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"23","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mashiko","id":"x32161"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1985","earliest":"1985-01-01","latest":"1985-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"57.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"impressed","position":"on base","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Maker's mark","note":"Maker's mark; on base; impressed"}],"objectHistory":"Kikuchi?","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, Shimaoka Tatsuzo, Mashiko, Japan, 1985","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Faulker, Rupert Japanese Studio Crafts: Tradition and the Avant-Garde, London: Laurence King Publishing, 1995, plate no. 2"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Faulker, Rupert 'Contemporary Japanese Ceramics in the V&A' in Orientations, Vol. 17, No. 12; December 1986, p.32, fig 1."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Earle, Joe, ed.
