As Quant diversified in the 1960s her designs for hats were made under licence. Boater hats were particularly popular at the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th century and continued to be used for specific occasions in the mid-20th century, in particular for boating and as part of school uniforms. Quant’s use of the boater style demonstrates the historicism which can be seen in many of her designs.
