Its use as a wedding flower emerged in the early 19th century, and by 1840, imitation orange blossom was a popular trimming for bridal attire. It was believed to symbolise purity and innocence, and so was generally not worn for second marriages.\r\n\r\nImitation orange blossom could be made from wax, paper, cloth, or even feathers. This example is made from cream cloth which has been dipped in wax to reproduce the texture of the flower petals. The buds are made from paper pulp or composition, which has been painted and waxed. The leaves are embossed waxed paper.\r\n\r\nSprays such as this were sold separately, and would have been used as all-purpose wedding decorations. They were used on wedding cakes, for table-decorations and to trim favours as well as decorating the bridal garments.","physicalDescription":"Spray of orange blossom, flowers made of waxed cloth with waxed and embossed green papercloth leaves, all mounted on silk-wrapped wire stem.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wax","id":"AAT14585"},{"text":"artificial flowers","id":"x40890"},{"text":"waxed paper","id":"AAT189223"},{"text":"wire","id":"AAT11063"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Waxed cloth artificial flowers, embossed waxed paper and silk-wrapped wire","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019LX4071"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES306822"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Artificial flowers","id":"x40890"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 19th century","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Edward Nugée QC","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Approximate measurements, due to irregular, non-static nature of object.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This is associated with the wedding of Elizabeth Wroughton Richards to the Reverend Andrew Nugee on 8th August 1854, but is more likely to be connected to their son's wedding in 1887, when wax flowers such as this were extremely popular for trimmings, wreaths and favours.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Spray of waxed cloth orange blossom with green papercloth leaves, mounted on silk-wrapped wire stem, Great Britain, late 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.9-2008"],"accessionNumberNum":"9","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2008,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-09","recordCreationDate":"2008-02-26","availableToBook":true}}
