He particularly enjoys sketching circus and has made hundreds of lightning drawings capturing the moment at the ringside, but sketched this image while the white-face clown marionette was being performed in the Globe, in the European Galleries, during the museum performance festival on Sunday, 29 April 2018. Curtis was in the museum to run a drawing workshop, and also sketched Metta Theatre's show in the lecture theatre.\n\nThe white-face clown (S.21-2005) is one of a number of Victorian marionettes from the Jim Tiller troupe. Constructed from carved and painted wood, and stuffed calico with leather joints, he is dressed in woollen stockings that would have been knitted by one of the Tiller family and a cotton, frilled tunic with matching pantaloons.
