Wilkinson studied at the Birmingham School of Art from 1900-1903 and worked in Paris with Maxwell Armfeld, but came to prominence in theatre design in 1912 with his designs for Harley Granville Barker's production of Twelfth Night at the Savoy Theatre, and in 1914 with his sensational set and costume designs for Granville Barker’s A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Savoy Theatre, with its gilded fairies and iridescent forest.\r\n\r\nWilkinson is considered to be one of the greatest Shakespearean designers of the first half of the 20th century. He first worked as a stage designer in 1910 for the Charles Frohman repertory season at the Duke of York's Theatre, and later with Nigel Playfair at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. He also produced work for C.B. Cochran, for the Phoenix Society and Stage Society, and became a governor of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre where he designed A Midsummer Night's Dream again in a production by William Bridges-Adams in April 1932.\n\r\nThis design has no inscriptions, but may well have been intended for a character in A Midsummer Night's Dream, in the London or Stratford productions. The Department of Theatre & Performance owns a costume designed by Wilkinson and worn by Lillah McCarthy as Helena in the 1914 production. This design with its printed borders and red necklace is reminiscent of that costume, which also features red beads in its trimming.","physicalDescription":"Pencil, watercolour, gouache and ink drawing of a Greek woman wearing a costume comprising a long, gathered white skirt and short-sleeved over-tunic, edged and trimmed in black.
