His first notable work was photographing Fred Astaire and Claire Luce as the leads in the musical The Gay Divorcee. Rogers was playing the saxophone for the production at the time.\n\nBy the end of the 1930s he had covered many important West End productions, including John Gielgud's Queen's Theatre seasons in 1937 and 1938. Rogers also regularly photographed the new revues, including the Nude Tableau, at the Windmill Theatre. \n\nDuring the Second World War, a large proportion of his photographs were destroyed. Rogers found new work photographing both ballet and opera at the Royal Opera House in the 1950s and 1960s, producing photographs of productions as well as portrait studies of singers and dancers.\n\nOver his career he captured performers such as Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Alicia Markova, Julie Christie, John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Bette Davis, Douglas Fairbanks, Vivien Leigh, Edith Evans, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi and Joan Sutherland.","physicalDescription":"Gelatin-silver print portrait of Richard Ainley in costume for an unidentified production, wearing an open-collar shirt, coat, large jewelled ring and with his left hand resting on the hilt of a rapier sword.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rogers, Houston","id":"A1838"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"},{"text":"gelatin silver process","id":"AAT139114"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelatin-silver print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"The Royal Photographic Society","id":"THES281081"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2019LJ6254","2019LJ6793"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"MB005","shelf":"BY001","box":"XRP 487"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":"Houston Rogers Studio, 20 Sloane Street, London, SW1."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"20th century","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Royal Photographic Society Collection at the V&A, acquired with the generous assistance of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Art Fund.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"photograph"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"photograph"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'10670'/\r\n'5745-A'/\r\n'Richard Ainley'/\r\n'Copyright/This photograph must not be copied or reproduced except for editorial press purposes/Houston Rogers/20, Sloane Street/London/S.W.1./Tel: Belgravia 2820'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"pencil and ink"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Houston Rogers, portrait of Richard Ainley, 20th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Ainley, Richard","id":"N12441"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["RPS.3119-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"3119","accessionNumberPrefix":"RPS","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"RPS collection - V&A identifier","id":"THES275176"},"number":"XRP 487"},{"type":{"text":"Royal Photographic Society number","id":"THES275233"},"number":"10670"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-27","recordCreationDate":"2018-07-26","availableToBook":false}}
