They were designed by Lan Vy Nguyen, founder of Fashion4Freedom, and hand-carved by Hue-based master artisan Do Van Thanh as part of <i>Reincarnated Soles</i>, a project preserving Hue’s traditional Pagoda woodcraft through contemporary footwear. Each pair takes 18–22 days to make.\r\n\r\nHue, in central Vietnam, was the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945), when highly skilled craftspeople produced goods commissioned for the royal court and Imperial City. Craftsmanship remains an important part of Hue’s cultural identity, although many traditional skills are under threat.\r\n\r\nThe wooden soles are intricately carved with three-dimensional sprays of chrysanthemums. The openwork makes the soles flexible and lightweight. The chrysanthemum, associated with birth, marriage, death and rebirth, is an important symbol in Vietnamese culture.
