It shows the stage as it was before the reconstruction of the Drury Lane interior in 1921-22. \r\n\r\nThe model is built to scale and incorporates all the working parts of the stage. The proscenium arch is fitted with curtains and a properly balanced fire safety curtain; the fly galleries on either side of the stage have lines and pulleys which are able to lift the model scenery, sections of the stage floor can rise and fall and the miniature trapdoors actually work. At the front of the stage are two multi-sided star traps, so-called because, when open, their triangular segments resemble a star. These were used in pantomime for surprise entrances by demons and fairies. They operated on a system of ropes and pulleys and were extremely dangerous. The performer stood on a small platform beneath the trapdoor and would be propelled upwards through the hinged flaps when weights were released, appearing to burst out of the solid floor. There were plenty of opportunities for an unfortunate actor to be injured and in the mid 20th century star traps were banned for safety reasons. The model provides a record of what was once an essential piece of stage machinery.","physicalDescription":"Model of the stage of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, including the proscenium arch, stage boxes and the orchestra pit. The orchestra pit contains figures of the conductor and musicians, all painted. Onstage is a backdrop and cut cloths showing a winter landscape. The stage floor has various workable trapdoors. There are winches below the stage and, above it, there are fly galleries with pulleys and ropes made of string and painted figures of stage staff. At the front of the model, lower centre, below the orchestra pit, is a plaque, giving details and recording the presentation to Miss Renée Meyer. To lower right, a smaller plaque notes the reconstruction by Alan Bishop in 1977.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hollyman, J.H.","id":"A23098"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Bishop, Alan","id":"A23099"},"association":{"text":"restorer","id":"AAT25821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"string (fiber product)","id":"AAT14249"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cutting (dividing)","id":"AAT53069"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"glueing","id":"AAT53012"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted wood, paper and string","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2010EL6336","2010EL6339","2010EL6332","2010EL6331","2010EL6315","2010EL6314","2010EL6313","2010EL6312","2010EL6311","2010EL6310"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"104","id":"THES49929"},"free":"","case":"CA017","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"models (representations)","id":""}],[{"text":"theatre model","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1911","earliest":"1906-01-01","latest":"1915-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1977","earliest":"1977-01-01","latest":"1977-12-31"},"association":{"text":"restoration (process)","id":"AAT53742"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"184","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"103","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"107","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions of display case","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The model of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane was made for a child actor, Renée Meyer, when she was appearing in pantomime at the theatre, ca.1911.
