This radio was launched in the same year, and was Sony's first major export. It represents an early stage in Sony's development of miniaturised audio equipment, following the production of the first pocket radio in 1957.\r\n\r\nThis simple design was very popular - Sony produced almost half a million sets in four different colours. Its slim, tapered shape fits comfortably into the hand, and the volume and tuning dials are both on the same side, allowing the radio to be easily operated with the thumb. The handle pivots can be folded away underneath the radio to minimise its size, or used as a stand for hands-free listening.","physicalDescription":"A small, vertical hand held radio with a black case and inset circular speaker with branding and a tuning dial, and a handle that can be folded away underneath the radio.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Sony","id":"A5666"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Sony","id":"A5666"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plastic and metal","categories":[{"text":"Audio equipment","id":"THES49027"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2008BT4253"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR003","id":"THES385145"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES342154"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Radio","id":""}],[{"text":"Case","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Tokyo (city)","id":"x32430"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1958","earliest":"1958-01-01","latest":"1958-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"63 x 106 x 25 mm \r\nSource: radiomuseum.org\r\n8 x 12 x 4 cm\r\nSource: FWK register","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Portable transistor radio and case, Model TR 610, designed and manufactured by Sony, plastic and metal, 1958","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"SONY PORTABLE 6-TRANSISTOR MODEL TR 610\r\nDesigned and made by the Sony Corporation, Tokyo, Japan, 1958\r\nPlastic and alloy\r\nGiven by Sony (UK) Ltd.\r\nW.21-1992\r\n\r\nIn 1958 the Tokyo Telecommunications Company adopted 'Sony' as its corporate name.
