The original arch was built in the 3rd century and was destroyed by ISIS in 2015. In response to this The Institute for Digital Archaeology launched a crowdfunding campaign to source images of the arch in order to create a 3D model of the arch using photogrammetry. TORART were then commissioned to create a 70% scale reproduction and this was displayed in Trafalgar Square on the fourth plinth in 2016. As an act of solidarity with the people of Syria, the Institute for Digital Archaeology created a 3D digital rendering of the now lost ‘Arch of Triumph’ using photogrammetry, so that it could be recreated in material form at any time. Based on approximately 200 photographs taken by archaeologists, scientists and tourists, the finished arch shows that a convincing reproduction can be created without touching the original.
