In 1973, the artistic directors of the now renamed Royal Exchange Theatre Company, Braham Murray, Casper Wrede, Michael Elliott and James Maxwell, were joined by theatre designer Richard Negri. Negri developed his initial design ideas for a permanent theatre inside the vast hall whilst teaching at Wimbledon School of Art, where he created a series of scale models with his assistant Peter Bennion. \r\n\r\nNegri was inspired by the structure of a rose, designing a theatre-in-the-round where the stage and the auditorium created one continuous form. The architects, Levitt Bernstein Associates, noted that \"the beginning for us was a small paper and wire model sitting in the middle of a table with Richard Negri striding round it talking about the form of a rose.\" This model shows an initial concept for the theatre, with multi-coloured panels and spiralling staircases surrounding the structure.\r\n\r\nConstruction of the final design began in April 1975 and the theatre opened on 15 September 1976. Negri remained an artistic director of the company until 1983.","physicalDescription":"Model, preliminary design for the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, in three sections:\r\n\r\nS.163:1-2018\r\nCircular structure of wire, card and hand-coloured paper, showing the shape of the auditorium, with sloping walkways in paper attached to the outside. \n\nS.163:2-2018\nLower roof for the model, circle with a second smaller circular structure on top, from which an extension fans out to form a cover to the theatre entrance.\n\nS.163:3-2018\nUpper roof for the model, conical structure of paper and wire.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Richard Negri","id":"A39323"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wire","id":"AAT11063"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"card","id":"x30344"}],"techniques":[{"text":"model-making","id":"AAT53619"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-coloured paper, card, wood and wire ","categories":[{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Architectural models","id":"THES274433"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2018KW9248","2018KW9249","2018KW9250","2018KW9251","2018KW9247"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES355580"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES355580"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES355580"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"architectural models","id":"x44244"}],[{"text":"Theatre model","id":""}],[{"text":"architectural models","id":"x44244"}],[{"text":"Theatre model","id":""}],[{"text":"architectural models","id":"x44244"}],[{"text":"Theatre model","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1973","earliest":"1971-01-01","latest":"1975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Negri family","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"assembled","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"assembled","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"assembled","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:1-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:1-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:1-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:2-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:2-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:2-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:3-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"17","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:3-2018","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"S.163:3-2018","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Model of a design for the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, designed by Richard Negri, ca. 1973","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.163:1-2018","S.163:2-2018","S.163:3-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"163","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-11","recordCreationDate":"2018-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
