It was destroyed by a German V-1 rocket in 1944 and was rebuilt in 1951. Pope John Paul II raised it to the status of a basilica in 1998. The statue of the Virgin is a polychromed oak sculpture dating from the 14th century and was granted a canonical coronation by Pope Pius IX in 1867. The indulgenced prayer on the back of this card, approved by the Bishop of Liege in 1867, was probably composed in honour of that occasion. \n\nEvery seven years a festival is celebrated, attracting many visitors,  during which the statue is carried in a solemn procession around the old city and the events and miracles illlustrated on the card are re-enacted in <i>tableaux vivants</i> along the route. The last septennial was in 2017. Formerly a black Madonna, the statue was heavily restored in modern times, losing its iconic black patina in the process. The same fate has recently (2017) and controversially overtaken the famous Black Madonna of Chartres Cathedral, <i>Notre Dame du Pilar.</i>      ","physicalDescription":"Rectangular holy card (portrait format) printed in black on cream paper.
