These enamels, called yingcai ('strong colours'), were applied on the porcelain body left unglazed and re-fired at a lower temperature. The technique was known as susancai ('plain three colours') in Chinese and 'on the biscuit' in English.\r\n\r\nThis kind of headrests were used in households to ensure a correct posture while sleeping; larger examples were also produced to be buried in tombs.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain headrest decorated in green, yellow, aubergine and black enamels (famille verte palette) with phoenixes contained in cartouches against a diaper ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in coloured enamels","categories":[{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kangxi","id":"AAT18482"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2009CC7147","2008BT2424","2008BT2423","2008BT2415","2008BR9739","2017KC2788"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"21","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pillow","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1683-1710","earliest":"1683-01-01","latest":"1710-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"36.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
