Trained as an apprentice at Edward Barnsley's (1900-1987) workshop, he was influenced by the 'Cotswold School' of furniture making and inspired by the history of furniture making and visits to Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. \n\nHe set up his first workshop in Hindhead, Surrey in 1962 before moving to Kentisbeare in Devon where he was able to buy native woods such as Devon walnut, buying the whole tree to match the grain for the front and back legs of chairs. Receiving a Crafts Council bursary in 1975, he travelled to Japan to study vernacular wooded architecture and following a Churchill fellowship, studied in South Korea. These experiences would influence his work and he began to use less decoration and more of the wood as part of the overall structure, as can be seen in the design of this table.","physicalDescription":"A wooden rectangular table on arched, moulded legs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Peters, Alan","id":"A21034"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"olive (wood)","id":"AAT12333"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulding","id":"AAT53134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tropical olive wood","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2012FL3422"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES343544"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Coffee table","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kentisbeare","id":"x41577"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1978","earliest":"1978-01-01","latest":"1978-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"457","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1140","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"498","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Taken from register","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Table, designed and made by Alan Peters, 1978","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Table\r\nDesigned and made by Alan Peters (British, born 1933)\r\nKentisbeare, Devon\r\nTropical olive wood\r\n1978\r\n\r\nAlan Peters established his business in 1962 after lengthy workshop and design training, part of which was with Edward Barnsley.","date":{"text":"1989-2006","earliest":"1989-01-01","latest":"2006-12-31"}}],"partNumbers":["W.61-1978"],"accessionNumberNum":"61","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":1978,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-02","recordCreationDate":"2008-01-24","availableToBook":false}}
