It epitomises Mary Quant’s approach to fashion for women, challenging the conventions of its time, by introducing comfort, colour and humour, as typified by its length, ease of fit, quirky collar, tie and epaulettes. It was designed by Mary Quant for her Ginger Group label in England in 1966.\n\nMary Quant was one of the most important British fashion designer of the 1960s. Along with her husband, Alexander Plunket Greene and business partner Archie McNair, she opened her first boutique, Bazaar, on the King’s Road in 1955. She originally stocked clothes from wholesalers but soon became frustrated with the options available and began making her own designs for clothes that were manufactured and sold successfully. In 1963 Quant set up the Ginger Group label, through which she sold pieces at a lower price point that at Bazaar. \n\n","physicalDescription":"This dress is made from purple jersey and has contrasting tan cuffs, epaulettes, collar and tie.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mary Quant","id":"C6344"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Ginger Group","id":"AUTH347156"},"association":{"text":"for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"jersey","id":"x35748"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool jersey","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Ready-to-wear","id":"THES278915"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LC8530","2018LC8531","2018LC8532","2018LC8533","2018LC8534","2018KV7130","2018KV7131","2018KV7132","2018KV7133","2018KV7134","2018KV7135","2018KV7136","2018KV7137","2018KV7138","2018KV7139","2018KV7141","2018KV7142"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"EXH3","id":"THES265486"},"free":"","case":"3B","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress","id":"x47499"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1966","earliest":"1966-01-01","latest":"1966-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Label\r\n\r\n\"Mary Quant's Ginger Group (R) \r\nMade in England'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Label\r\n\r\n\"9\" ","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Refers to sizing","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Label\r\n\r\n\"We recommend that this garment should be dry cleaned\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"This dress is from Mary Quant's Ginger Group label.
