Although Flato used gold prominently in many of his pre-war pieces, in this example it also reflects the increased use of gold in jewellery during the 1940s and 50s. This was a result of wartime platinum requisitioning for use in the armaments industry. \r\n\r\nPaul Flato enjoyed his greatest success during the 1930s and 40s, when his innovative and often whimsical jewellery was worn by both society ladies and Hollywood stars alike. Many actresses wore his jewels on-screen, including Greta Garbo in <i>Two-Faced Woman,</i>and Rita Hayworth in <i>Blood and Sand</i>.","physicalDescription":"Necklace of gold spheres with a brilliant-cut diamond.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"flato, paul","id":"A20974"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"diamond","id":"AAT11084"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, brilliant-cut diamond","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BP3809","2007BP3406","2007BP3810","2007BP3407"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"016","id":"THES407878"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"necklace","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940-1950","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1950-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the American Friends of the V&A through the generosity of Patricia V.
