Toulouse-Lautrec's poster, however, bears little relevance to the business it advertises, choosing instead to entertain viewers by presenting them with a titillating image. \r\n\r\nIn a parody of the stock vignette 'the doctor's visit', an artisan arrives at a client's house and is shown by the maid to her mistress's bedroom, seemingly to perform an examination, equipped with a toolbox rather than a doctor's medicine bag. The client, sitting up in bed dressed in a transparent negligée, passively awaits his attentions. The maid's expression of distress, the little dog's raised tail and the ruddiness of the artisan's complexion all serve to indicate the licentious nature of the visit.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph poster, 2nd state, depicting a woman sitting up in bed with a dog in her lap. Her maid is in attendance and announces the arrival of a man in a white coat carrying a toolbox and hammer. The poster advertises 'L'Artisan modern' created by André Marty for his collection of 'objets d'art, meubles, ensembles decoratifs' for sale in ten Paris shops, the addresses of which are lettered at the bottom of the poster. Signed with the artist's monogram of the elephant design. The word 'qui?' is lettered on the wall behind the man.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec","id":"A6626"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Imprimerie Bourgerie et Cie.","id":"A13925"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"AAT25732"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithograph","id":"x39981"},{"text":"planographic printing","id":"AAT53255"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph poster printed in four colours with crayon, brush and spatter techniques ","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[{"text":"Post-impressionist","id":"AAT21508"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES393050"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1896","earliest":"1896-01-01","latest":"1896-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.126-1942","id":"O137591"},"association":"Version"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"93.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'qui?'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Bottom of interrogation mark has been turned into a hot air balloon.
