As British graphic design was developing its own distinctive character in the nineteen sixties, Robin Fior stands out for experimenting with graphic idioms that could communicate radical political messages to a mass audience. \n\r\nThis poster was designed for the Committee of 100, a British anti-nuclear organisation that advocated non-violent civil disobedience to achieve its aims, heralding the advent of mass social movements in British politics. Fior was a member of the Committee and was briefly jailed for sedition in connection with their activities. Within this new era of politics the ‘Polaris, No’ poster is one of the first examples of a graphic designer throwing his skills behind a cause, producing graphics to organise rallies and be carried in demonstrations.  \n\n","physicalDescription":"Poster in blue and red with text in white and black","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Fior, Robin","id":"AUTH348605"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Committee of 100","id":"AUTH348606"},"association":{"text":"commissioned by","id":"x28662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2018LH3635"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"514","id":"THES49549"},"free":"","case":"TR","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1961","earliest":"1961-01-01","latest":"1961-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the V&A Members Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"75.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"102","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This poster comes from the collection of the late David King, a renowned graphic designer who was Fior's student and his life-long friend.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Polaris, No' poster designed for the the Committee of 100 by Robin Fior, 1961","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.707-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"707","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2018-03-14","availableToBook":false}}
