But through rejecting colour for ‘white gold’– the unbleached cotton that historically had been created in small-scale factories in this region – Pheulpin transformed her practice and imagery. In the resulting body of work - executed through an almost meditative ritual of folding and pinning strips of cotton - Pheulpin transformed, literally and metaphorically, what is essentially a textile art into sculpture.\n\nPheulpin’s compositions play a visual trick, conjuring up in turn organic, vegetal, mineral or geological forms. To some, her circular slabs, such as this Eclipse XII, resemble, in their structure and texture, sedimentary rock formations. To others, they look like ceramic or clay that has been cut or carved. They are in fact made of one-centimetre wide strips of calico that have been repeatedly and meticulously folded and pinned together to form a large disc of dense, undulating surfaces. Pheulpin plays with the natural properties of unbleached cotton - stiffness and flexibility - to create abstract pieces that defy our senses and imagination. \n\nIn 2021, the artist had a major retrospective, 'Simone Pheulpin: Plieuse de Temps', at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (7 December 2021 - 16 January 2022), spanning 50 years of her career.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"This abstract fabric sculpture is made of calico, which is unbleached and undyed, ivory-coloured, cotton.
