These can be feelings of vulnerability, of joy, of attraction or repulsion, of sorrow and compassion. Drawing upon the subject matter of religious art, mythology and fairy tales, Smit’s work explores our innermost psychological recesses and unconscious desires.\r\n\r\nBorn in The Netherlands in 1960, Smit originally trained in graphics and print-making, but turned to ceramics in 1996 following a residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC). Common to all her sculptures is their sublime and seductive surface treatment in clay and glaze, with countless repeated pre-fabricated elements such as the strands of hair seen on this Hare.\r\n\r\nSmit has a strong morbid fascination, and relishes explicit and potentially shocking imagery that evokes death, disease and mortality. This is illustrated here by a wounded hare with its rib-cage exposed and entrails spilling out. Seated on a cauliflower, and flanked with a knife and fork, we are reminded of the duality in our love of animals.","physicalDescription":"Figure of a hare sitting on a base of a white cauliflower and green leaves.
