His work can be found in the permanent collections of over 40 major museums. He has contributed to 37 solo exhibitions and 19 international exhibitions, several of which travelled to several venues in different countries. One of the more significant of these foreign exhibitions which Paley contributed to was the ground-breaking <i>Towards A New Iron Age</i> held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1982 which helped to establish a valid, contemporary ironwork aesthetic and for which the `Victoria and Albert Gate' was Paley's contribution.","physicalDescription":"Gate of forged and fabricated mild steel with a black patina, rectilinear formed of a complex interweaving of vertical and horizontal bars, the vertical bars with twisted knops, those grouped nearest the hinge extending upwards and curved at the top. The main frame of the gate has two indented corners, diagonally opposite each other, the lower sections of the vertical uprights connected by curved horizontal bars, extended uprights immediately adjacent to the hinge, the lower ends forged into a `flame' like terminal, the upper ends include a twisted finial, an encircling strip and counterpoised, curved terminals. The supporting uprights either side have twisted sections, counterpoised curved terminals and notched, stepped bases. These supporting uprights are welded to a flat rectangular plate with chamfered edges, and which are bolted to a plain, rectangular base plate of sheet steel.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Albert Paley","id":"A7206"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"forging","id":"AAT54033"},{"text":"patination","id":"x46651"},{"text":"welding","id":"AAT53958"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Forged and fabricated mild steel with a black patina, brass details","categories":[{"text":"Architectural fittings","id":"THES48994"},{"text":"Ironwork","id":"THES251837"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2018KY4136","2018KY4133","2018KY4135","2018KY4134","2018KX9055"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"114E","id":"THES49910"},"free":"","case":"EXP","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Gate","id":"AAT2916"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rochester (New York)","id":"x29103"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1982","earliest":"1982-01-01","latest":"1982-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the James Yorke-Radleigh Bequest Fund.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"209.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"270.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"2600","unit":"lb","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed, stamped `ALBERT PALEY 1982'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Designed and made for the V&A exhibition, `Towards a New Iron Age,' May 12th - July 10th 1982.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"`Victoria and Albert' Gate, forged and fabricated mild steel with a black patina, United States, Rochester NY, 1982, designed and made by Albert Paley","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Towards A New Iron Age</u>, London, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1982, p.49.
