The shoulders and lower neck consist of sharply articulated ribs reminiscent of drapery (the ‘kasane’ of the work’s title refers to the traditional Japanese sartorial custom of women wearing multiple layered robes of differently coloured textiles). The ribbed drapery sits on two conjoined cushions that taper symmetrically outwards to two points at left and right. The base is flat. The whole form including the base is lacquered red and polished to a medium to high gloss. The artist’s signature, date and title of the work are written on the base in black lacquer.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sasai Fumie","id":"AUTH347696"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2026PP3675","2026PP3673","2026PP3672"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"45","id":"THES49801"},"free":"","case":"CA006","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES398891"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}],[{"text":"Storage box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Kyoto","id":"x31966"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2014","earliest":"2014-01-01","latest":"2014-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture, 'Kasane 5', red lacquer on a dry-lacquer substrate, Japan, 2014, by Sasai Fumie (b.1973), modern studio crafts; with signed wooden storage box\r\n笹井 史恵　《かさね 5》　2014年","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"<b>Urushi Now: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer</b>\r\nThe sculpture’s title refers to a traditional Japanese custom in which women wear multiple layers of differently coloured kimono.
