Formed of a small rectangular length of fabric, han-eri are sewn to the collars of under-kimono (naga-juban).  Although usually plain white, decorative han-eri such as this further enhance the kimono ensemble. Made of teal polyester crepe, it has a psychedelic design of fluorescent mushrooms which harmonises with the vibrant underwater patterns on the kimono, obi and obi-dome. All of these pieces are by Iroca, a kimono brand based in Tokyo. Founded by Ishikawa Narutoshi in 2001, the brand started with accessories rather than kimono. For Ishikawa, all aspects of Japanese dress need to reflect contemporary design, an ambition achieved through his vivid use of colour, imaginative patterns and unusual kimono materials like digitally printed polyester.
