The prints have been pasted into embossed decorative borders of gothic architectural ornament and bound together, either to be used as a devotional booklet or displayed like a miniature altarpiece for contemplation. \r\n\r\nThe finely-embossed architectural detail is typical of late nineteenth-century French manufacture and relates this object to a cameo-embossed souvenir of Notre-Dame de Paris also in the collection (see E.453-1998) as well as to the embossed lace paper valentines published by the French-born perfumier Eugène Rimmel (1820-1887). The sentimental religious imagery, often based on famous paintings, was a speciality of printers and publishers concentrated in the neighbourhood of the basilica of Saint Sulpice in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, giving its name to the style Saint Sulpice.","physicalDescription":"Fourteen hand-coloured engravings depicting the Passion and Death of Christ, with captions in French printed below the images and prayers in French printed on the back. The prints have been pasted into fourteen identical gothic arch-shaped decorative borders of architectural ornament in embossed brown card which have been linked together with small squares of linen tape to create a zigzag-folded booklet or miniature 'altarpiece'.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Villemur","id":"AUTH347520"},"association":{"text":"Printer and publisher","id":"x35446"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"card","id":"x30344"},{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"},{"text":"hand-colouring","id":"AAT133555"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-coloured engravings, embossed card and linen tape","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2018KR1531","2018KR1532","2018KR1533","2018KR1536"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB1E","shelf":"GG","box":"235"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"Printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860 - 1880","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by TIm Travis in memory of Leslie Travis","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"each panel including border","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"112.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"whole object","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"each panel including border","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"image aperture ","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"image aperture","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"folded","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Unknown artist\nThe Stations of the Cross\nPrinted and published by Villemur, Paris\nAbout 1870\nHand-coloured engravings, embossed card and linen tape\nGiven by Tim Travis in memory of Leslie Travis","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Jesus Christ","id":"N1515"},{"text":"The Virgin Mary","id":"N16161"},{"text":"Saint Veronica","id":"N517"},{"text":"Simon of Cyrene","id":"N487"},{"text":"Mary Magdalene","id":"N482"},{"text":"Saint John the Evangelist","id":"N103"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"The Crucifixion","id":"V106"},{"text":"The Passion","id":"V113"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.50-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"50","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-19","recordCreationDate":"2018-02-13","availableToBook":false}}
