As their skins were often discarded, fashion companies adopted the skins as an alternative to leather. While the pirarucu is a protected species, locals rely on pirarucu fishing as an important source of income. Osklen only use fish from government regulated farms consisting of 2.5 to 5 acres in the state of Rondonia in the Amazon. Compared to cattle farming, pirarucu farming generates lower CO2 and methane emissions, reduces the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, and farmers achieve 40% more productivity by fishing rather than farming. Pirarucu farms provide employment for local communities and a sustainable source of food, while maintaining fish stocks. The fish do not undergo any genetic modifications or hormone treatments and the skins are dried without chromium.","categories":[{"text":"Bags","id":"THES284620"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019MJ1483","2019MJ1488"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA026","id":"THES413423"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES392753"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoulder bag","id":"AAT216945"}],[{"text":"Protective cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Osklen and Instituto-E","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Shoulder bag from pirarucu fish skin and protective cover by Osklen, 2018\n\nShoulder bag from pirarucu fish skin by Osklen, 2018\n\nProtective cover by Osklen, 2018","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Fashioned from Nature\r\n\r\nPROTECTED SPECIES\r\n\r\nBrazilian fashion brand Osklen specialises in luxury products made from sustainable materials.
