Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's opera, The Yeomen of the Guard, in the 1990s.","physicalDescription":"Part 1: Doublet\n\r\nHeavy red wool doublet with long full sleeves and a flared, pleated skirt. Decorated with narrow bands of blue silk velvet bordered with gold metallic braid. The doublet has a square neckline bound with synthetic leather. The sleeves have a full upper sleeve and a closer fitting under sleeve with a ‘v’ shaped vent at the cuff.\n\r\nThe centre front and centre back of the doublet is decorated with an appliqued motif of a deep crimson and gold silk velvet ‘Tudor rose’, surmounted by a crown. Both the rose and the crown are further embellished with gold metallic thread embroidery. Faded sections on the front and rear of the bodice indicate that ‘H’ and ‘R’ shaped letters were previously appliqued to the surface of the garment.\n\r\nThe bodice of the doublet is formed from overlapping panels and fastens at the proper left side with a vertical row of five brass buttons and is secured at the proper left shoulder with a pair of buttons. The skirt is formed from four overlapping box pleated panels.\n\r\nA maker’s label at the interior of the neckline reads: ‘L&H Nathans/Ltd/143 Drury Lane/London’. The names of multiple wearers are marked in the interior, one, handwritten in biro – ‘BROWN’, with further names, written on layered cotton tape labels.’ – at the centre back interior of the neck.\n\r\nPart 2: Hose\n\r\nPair of red wool knee length ‘hose’, fitting loosely to the leg from waist to mid-thigh and gathered with elastic at the knee. They fasten at the waist with a vertical row of 3 buttons and a hook and bar fastening at the centre front. The interior of the waist is faced with a cream cotton panel and 6 further buttons, designed to fit braces, are placed around the interior of the waist. \n\r\nThe hose are decorated with imitation slashing at the knee. This ‘slashed’ effect is formed from 7 pairs of oval panels, some with puffs of black cotton at the centre and all edged with gold metallic braid and blue silk velvet.\r\n\n\nPart 3: Belt\n\r\nLong narrow belt with large rectangular brass buckle at one end. The underside of the belt is faced with brown cotton and has a press stud at one end. The upper-side has a red wool ground bordered with a band of blue silk velvet edged at either side with a narrow length of gold braid.\n\r\nThe belt narrows to a curved point at one end, with a large bras buckle at the other. There is a red wool belt loop, also decorated with length of blue silk velvet and gold braid and eyelets to secure it.\n\r\nA decorative tassel, possibly a sword girdle, hangs from the belt. It is suspended from a metal disc and extends into three points, each terminating in a loop which is secured by a metal buckle and metal edged eyelets. The tassel has a red wool ground with a three pointed brass metal plate at the top edge. It is decorated with narrow lines of gold metallic braid. \r\n\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"},{"text":"elastic","id":"x29976"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"machine stitching","id":"x29587"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool, silk velvet, elastic, gold metallic braid","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Music","id":"THES253065"},{"text":"Costumes","id":"THES269529"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2018KP6747","2018KP6746","2018KP6748","2018KP6749","2018KP6750","2018KP6751"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES309136"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES309136"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES309136"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"theatre costume","id":"x47007"}],[{"text":"doublet","id":"AAT209829"}],[{"text":"theatre costume","id":"x47007"}],[{"text":"hose","id":"AAT24764"}],[{"text":"theatre costume","id":"x47007"}],[{"text":"belt","id":"x39371"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1990s","earliest":"1990-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"96","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 1, Doublet, Collar to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 1, Doublet, Across shoulders","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"44","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 1, Doublet, across waist","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"82","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 2, Hose, waist to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"39","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 2 Hose, across waist","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"128","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 3, Belt, full length end to end","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"110","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sash, edge to edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sash, across, edge to edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 3, belt, across","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 3, Belt, Length, maximum, including tassel","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approximate","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Part 3, Belt, Width, maximum, including tassel","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"9.25","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Packed weight of object","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Costume consisting of a doublet, hose and belt, worn by a Guard in a D'Oyly Carte Opera Company production of W.S.
