R. Ashbee was a man of immense talents and energy and a defining figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement. In 1888 he founded the Guild of Handicraft in the East End of London with the intention of reviving traditional craft skills and providing satisfying employment in a deprived area of the city. Trained originally as an architect, he is known also for his highly innovative furniture, metalwork, silver and jewellery designs. \r\n\r\nThis necklace is set with cabochon turquoises whose deliberate lack of uniformity reflects Ashbee's appreciation for natural, uncut stones. It was originally hung with chains and pendants also made by the Guild of Handicraft.","physicalDescription":"Necklace of silver, gold and turquoise.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ashbee, Charles Robert","id":"A8102"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Guild of Handicraft","id":"A9111"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"turquoise","id":"AAT11164"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, gold, and tuquoise","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AX6142","2006AX6093"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"27","shelf":"C","box":"2"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Necklace","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1903","earliest":"1898-01-01","latest":"1907-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.118-1959","id":"O143176"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs G.
