The headlining act, Vesta Tilley (1864-1952), was a male impersonator and huge draw on the music hall stage at a time where women were not seen wearing trousers. She aimed to create convincing male characters, her most popular character being the smart, well-dressed \"man-about-town\" - made famous in her hit song Burlington Bertie. By impersonating dandies and fops, Tilley poked fun at male foibles and eccentricities, and was immensely popular with women who saw her as a symbol of independence. The poster also includes the famous music hall comedians George Robey (1869-1954), R. G. Knowles (1858-1919) and Dan Leno (1860-1904).","physicalDescription":"Poster advertising Vesta Tilley at the Tivoli Theatre of Varieties, 1900.
