It was presented by the London-based theatrical agent Louis Sydney Elgar Parsons, the co-proprietor with Edward Kidd of London's Guild Club in Panton Street. Parsons worked under the name Sydney Elgar and appears to have specialised in this type of entertainment, in September 1956 presenting <i>The Peaches Page Show</i> at the City Varieties Theatre - 'the girliest show of nineteen fifty sex'. \n\nThe Pavilion Theatre was designed by J.J. Alley and built in 1908 when Variety was big business and most large towns in the UK boasted elegant new Variety Theatres with beautiful auditoriums. Refurbished in 1933 and 1960, when the stage was extended, it suffered the fate of many such theatres who found their audiences deminished by the rise of television and cinema. By the 1950s it became known for its girlie revues, but even that couldn't save it and it was converted for Mecca Bingo in 1960, although sometimes used to stage wrestling matches, with Bingo between the bouts.
