A former pupil of Dolmetsch, Robert Goble (1903-1991) made this instrument in 1939 for Patrick Lawther (1921-2008), a founder member of the Goble Recorder Trio.","physicalDescription":"Descant recorder of tulipwood with brown felt bag","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Goble, Robert","id":"A11289"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2008BU3368","2008BU3367","2008BU3369"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES299407"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES299407"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Descant Recorder","id":""}],[{"text":"Felt bag for descant recorder","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Haslemere","id":"x36643"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1939","earliest":"1939-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Prof. Patrick Lawther CBE","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This instrument was given to the Victoria and Albert Museum in May 2006 by Prof. Patrick Lawther (1921-2008), for whom Robert Goble (1903-1991) made this instrument in 1939. Goble made this instrument in 1939, when he had a workshop in Haselmere, before moving to Headington, Oxford, in 1947. Like the Carl Dolmetsch Tenor Recorder (W.12-2006) this instrument serves as a bridge between the 'Pre-Raphaelite' world of Arnold Dolmetsch's Early Music Revival and the explosion of popularity in Early Music that took place in the 1960s and 1970s.","briefDescription":"Tulipwood descant recorder with felt bag, by Robert Goble, Haslemere, 1939","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["W.13:1-2006","W.13:2-2006"],"accessionNumberNum":"13","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":2006,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Descant Recorder","Felt bag for descant recorder"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-17","recordCreationDate":"2008-01-09","availableToBook":true}}
