Stothard’s original images were used to create a series of engravings that appear in a ten-volume edition of Sterne’s &lt;i&gt;Works&lt;/i&gt;, published in 1798.  \n\nThe V&amp;A holds five drawings, three of which appeared at the beginning of individual volumes for &lt;i&gt;Tristram Shandy&lt;/i&gt;. The nineteenth-century captions for the other two drawings in the V&amp;amp;A collection refer to &lt;i&gt;A Sentimental Journey&lt;/i&gt;, but they actually illustrate scenes from Sterne’s &lt;i&gt;Letters&lt;/i&gt;.<i>\n</i><i>\n</i>In a letter to a Lady in 1761, the author describes how he is writing <i>Tristram Shandy</i> at their new home in Coxwold:  “My Lydia helps to copy for me – and my wife knits, and listens as I read her chapters.” (Letter XIX, 21 September 1761).
