Stothard’s original images were used to create a series of engravings that appear in a ten-volume edition of The works of Laurence Sterne, published in 1798. Volume 1 begins with a portrait of the author based upon a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, while Volumes 2 to 10 all contain frontispieces based upon drawings by Stothard.\n\nThe V&A holds five of Stothard's original drawings, three of which were reproduced at the beginning of individual volumes for Tristram Shandy. The nineteenth-century captions for the other two drawings in the V&A collection refer to A Sentimental Journey, but they were actually used to illustrate scenes from Sterne’s Letters. \n\nIn this case, Stothard's image appears as the frontispiece to Volume 10 of the Works, with the caption \"Letter CXVIII.\" The author writes about his daughter Lydia returning to France, and declining to accept money from him: \r\n\r\n “As a proof of it – when she left Coxwould, and I bad her adieu, I pulled out my purse and offered her ten guineas for her private pleasures – her answer was pretty, and affected me too much: - “No, my dear papa, our expences of coming from France may have straitened you – I would rather put an hundred guineas into your pocket than take ten out of it...”” (Letter CXVIII, 7 December 1767)\n\nThe British Museum also holds one drawing by Stothard, showing another scene from Tristram Shandy.
