Marriages in this period were crucial at certain levels of society, for bringing together money, property and political power. The Sackville pedigree shows how Robert Sackville, great-grandson of a merchant, married into one of the oldest English families, the Howards. It also highlights the rank of both families by focussing on their links to Elizabeth I, the reigning monarch.                                     \n\nWatercolour on parchment, with ink, gold and silver paint; the silver and some of the white pigments have tarnished to grey-black; some blue colours and ink inscriptions have also been lost.                                    \r\nDesigned and drawn by an unidentified herald, with portraits by an unknown miniaturist                                                                                                                                \nProbably commissioned by Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536-1608)                                                                                                                                                         \nMuseum no.
