Pasquier has developed a consistent body of work photographing wild animals and filming them, which she often presents via installations that include photography, moving image, sound and text. She seeks to make authentic depictions of her subjects, endeavouring for the resulting images to neither romanticise nor mythologise the featured animals. Pasquier’s practice explores the relationship between humans and animals, and considers changing environmental patterns alongside global ecology. For the series Consider the Birds, from which this photograph is taken, Pasquier spent three years travelling to the renowned bird observatory at Falsterbo, Sweden, which documents the migration patterns of birds around the world. She used a Hasselblad camera to photograph these birds in transit and in the process of being tagged, creating intimate and sensitive portraits that differ substantially from the scientific approach of the observatory and conventional wildlife photography. During the making of this series, Pasquier learnt specific information about the migration routes and average distances covered by various species. However, she deliberately omits this information, instead allowing the rich, dark, sensuous photographs to suggest the details of these monumental journeys. The images present Pasquier’s perceptive interpretation of her interaction with the wild animals and encourage an emotional experience as well as a visual one. They also inspire an enquiry into the viewer’s own relationship with the natural world, emphasising that this world is shared. ","physicalDescription":"The image of the bird is to the centre and bottom right of the photograph, although is not immediately clear that this is an image of a bird. To the centre right can be seen yellow and white feathers, which look more like fine hairs. On the right there is a raised area covered in white feathers in the foreground, and a blurred raised area in the background which have caught the light. The top line of the bird in the centre of the image is thinly framed in white. The left side and top of the image is in total darkness.
