Comprised of a stretch nylon vest top and stretch nylon pencil skirt in red gingham check, the garments are cut to incorporate curved pouch like shapes which were filled on the catwalk by shaped down pillows, creating distorted figures. This was a seminal collection in the work of Kawakubo wherein she challenged the notion of fashionable dress and the perfect, aspirational catwalk body, the collection came to be known as the ‘Lumps and Bumps’ collection. Speaking of the show Kawakubo said “I realised that the clothes could be the body and the body could be the clothes…This was an idea for possible new clothes. I then started to design the body. I didn’t expect them to be easy garments to be worn every day, but Comme des Garçons clothes should always be the new to the world and inspiring.’’ The collection inspired the choreographer Merce Cunningham who created the performance Scenario around the idea of this radical clothing which altered the body from different viewpoints. Scenario was first performed at the Brooklyn Academy in October of 1997 with the dancers all attired in ‘Lumps and Bumps’ garments designed by Kawakubo.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Asymmetric stretch nylon top and skirt in red gingham check.
