It was one of the ‘Picture Books’ created as part of the collaboration of illustrator Randolph Caldecott and Edmund Evans, an innovative wood engraver and printmaker. Two picture books, printed in full colour, were published annually. They were sold for one shilling each as an affordable alternative to the hand-coloured children’s books that were more common previously. The story is being told by an adult man, detailing his life as a young boy working on a farm, to charm a woman. In structure, it is similar to the nursery rhyme 'Old MacDonald Had Farm'. The proofs (E.240 to 242-1899) were eventually published in full colour.","physicalDescription":"Printed double page from the book 'The Farmer's Boy' by Randolph Caldecott.
