The painted design of trapezoids, right-angled lines, and solid planes of colour, emphasises and enhances the cubic form of the box.\r\n\r\nThe Omega Workshops were opened by the artist Roger Fry in London in 1913. As a promoter of decorative arts, Fry wanted to remove the perceived divide between fine and decorative arts. While some Omega furniture was specially designed, some of it was pre-existing second-hand furniture purchased at auction, painted and resold. Lewis disagreed with this, arguing that 'painted furniture' should show a harmonious relationship between the piece and its applied decoration. This box illustrates the principle. Lewis considered that Omega furniture was simply furniture that had paint applied.","physicalDescription":"Cube-shaped softwood box painted in red, black , ochre and cream.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lewis, Wyndham","id":"A7157"},"association":{"text":"designed and made by","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Rebel Arts Centre","id":"A18813"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"softwood","id":"AAT12510"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"painted softwood","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2013GA7307","2013GA7306"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CB017","id":"THES393442"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"March 1914 to August 1914","earliest":"1914-03-01","latest":"1914-08-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2017","earliest":"2017-02-08","latest":"2017-02-08"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"71.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"diameter including handles","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"minimum height (is slightly warped so does not sit flat)","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum height (is slightly warped so does not sit flat)","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Lewis and several other artists left Omega to found the Rebel Art Centre in March 1914, which closed when the First World War broke out in August 1914.
