Their home welcomed many bohemian guests and they socialized with everyone from stage stars to royalty - Olga was rumored to be the daughter of King Edward VII. Tall, with stunning red hair, she modelled for leading artists including Sargent, Sickert and Whistler. Not content with the life of a society beauty, she was also a writer and an amateur fencing champion, competing in tournaments around the world.\r\nBaron de Meyer joined the Royal Photographic Society in 1893, and the Linked Ring five years later. More than twenty of his photographs were published in Alfred Stieglitz’s quarterly Camera Work, and they range from contemplative still lifes to soft-focus portraits and pictures from Versailles, Tangier and China. Today, he is best remembered for his work for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. He became Vogue’s first official photographer in 1913, producing romantic studies of models lounging in elegant interiors, wearing the latest designs by couturiers such as Poiret, Patou and Chanel.\r\nThis undated brown-toned platinum print predates his work for fashion magazines, and appears to depict Olga clad in a flowing skirt, velvet and fur, accessorized with an extravagant black hat. The narrow cropping of the paper and the vertical planes of black and white emphasise her long slender form, while the lighting accentuates her elegant neck and high cheekbones.\r\nThe photograph was presented to the Royal Photographic Society by Frederick H. Evans in 1924.
