Small boxes to contain the powder were made in their thousands, with decoration varying from the most expensive ones in jewelled gold and silver, to much more modest boxes of carved wood. Inexpensive carved snuff boxes in the form of boots or shoes were popular in the 18th century and again in the 19th.","physicalDescription":"Snuff box in the form of a button boot, with a pull-off lid carved with two heads, one covered with a close-fitting hood, the other with incised hair. Incised decoration imitates buttons and the seaming of the leather. The edges of the pull-off stopper and the boot are bound with narrow bands of brass. The stopper extends about 0.7 cm into the boot. This section is carved with recesses at front and back, the one beneath the hooded figure is set with a small brass flange (missing under the head with hair). When the stopper is pushed into the boot, these provide some slight fastening.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved wood, possibly mhaogany, dark-stained, with bandings of brass","categories":[{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Smoking accessories","id":"THES49036"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AM7246","2014HH2400"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES302035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES302035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Snuff box","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1820-60","earliest":"1815-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MA/1/H926","id":"ARC163180"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Messrs Harrods Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with stopper in place","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"789","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed in black on a small paper label glued under the sole of the boot.
