Oriental styles were fashionable in Europe during the 1860s and 70s, partly a result of Japan’s decision in 1854 to open trading links with Western countries. This brought Japanese decorative arts to the attention of the West after centuries of isolation. Falize was particularly inspired by albums of Japanese printed woodblocks, drawing on their linear forms. He combined this with the rich colours of Chinese enamels. \r\n\r\nLike many of Falize’s Oriental pieces, the locket is made using cloisonné enamel, a technique found in traditional Japanese and Chinese metalwork. It involves a design being made up of small compartments (or cloisons) outlined by wire, which are then filled with different coloured enamels. \r\n\r\nFalize’s best-known cloisonné jewels were made in collaboration with Antoine Tard, a highly skilled freelance enameller. Tard created Oriental-style cloisonné enamels for both Falize and another important Parisian jewellery firm, Christofle. He won several awards for his work, including a gold collaborator’s medal at the 1867 Exposition Universelle held in Paris.","physicalDescription":"Locket of gold with cloisonné enamel","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Alexis Falize","id":"A7311"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Antoine Tard","id":"A17608"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cloisonné","id":"AAT53778"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold with cloisonné enamel","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BP2928","2007BP2929"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"25","shelf":"C","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"locket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1867-1870","earliest":"1867-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the American Friends of the V&A through the generosity of Patricia V.
