He took up sketching during the war and later learnt to etch at the Oxford Printmakers Co-operative. He became an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1995 and a Fellow in 1999. He exhibited mostly at Bankside Gallery, London; the Oxford Art Society and the Dolphin Gallery, Wantage. Irvine Loudon's etchings are of buildings, architectural details as well as landscapes and landscape details. This image of an oak tree at Wytham Woods in Oxfordshire, an area of ancient semi-natural woodland that has been owned and managed by the University of Oxford since 1942, was made by Irvine Loudon in 1992.
