Horst (1906-99) was born in Germany. In 1926, Horst enrolled in the Hamburg Kunstgewerbeschule (School of the Applied Arts), where he hoped to come into contact with Bauhaus artists. He moved to Paris in 1931 to work for several months as an apprentice to Le Corbusier, before taking up photography. Throughout the 1930s, he photographed for Vogue in Paris and New York, and became an American citizen in 1943. \r\n\r\nHorst ranks alongside Irving Penn and Richard Avedon as one of the twentieth century’s master photographers. His sixty-year career spans the opulence of Parisian pre-war haute couture and the rise of ready-to-wear in post-war New York. He produced more than 80 covers for Vogue, but he was never limited to photographing only fashion. He excelled at nude studies, portraiture, interiors and still life photography, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, from Hellenic sculpture to surrealist discourse. He captured natural forms, plants, shells and rocks, and created from them abstract collages. Horst’s little known travel photographs reveal a fascination for ancient cultures, landscapes and architecture.\r\n\nThis modern colour print was produced from an original colour transparency held in the Conde Nast Archive for display in the the V&A exhibition Horst: Photographer of Style (6 Sep 2014 – 4 Jan 2015). Although Horst made many colour photographs as part of his long career working for fashion magazines, few vintage colour prints by Horst exist, because colour images were often printed directly from transparencies onto the pages of magazines.\n\nV&A Curators worked in collaboration with the Condé Nast Archive and the Horst Estate to reprint these images on a large scale, allowing for this important part of Horst’s career to be included in the exhibition. Original transparencies were scanned in using a drum scanner and printed using an Epson Inkjet Printer. The large scale exposes extraordinary detail in the high-quality scans, revealing every eyelash, pore and stitch in the photographs. The images selected for reproduction focus on Horst’s fashion photography from the 1940s, a period which embodies his dynamic use of colour and signature aesthetic.","physicalDescription":"Large framed colour photograph with a white frame.
