From superfine strands woven into silky-smooth material, to coarse, chunky heavily textured plaits, straw offers almost infinite possibilities. This clip hat from the 1950s is covered with straw-coloured grosgrain (a heavy ribbed silk) almost completely concealed by straw plaiting applied to the surface. The straw plait has a raised, almost scaly texture. Leaves and flowers made up of coils of the same plait create extra texture and visual interest. While the materials and techniques are simple, the overall effect is one of great complexity.
