This makes the hat feel light and airy despite its sombre colour. It was possibly inspired by designs from the Paris couture house of Balenciaga, such as the late 1950s cellophane and ramie hat (Museum number T.61-1974), where dramatic headgear elevated beautifully-cut understated clothing.\n\r\nDolores (active c.1940s-1970s) was the name of a wholesale milliners based in Marylebone, London. A wholesale milliner manufactured and sold fashionable hats to boutiques, department stores such as Harrod's, and other retailers, including some in Paris. This let Dolores imply that their hats were desirable Paris models by naming that city on their label. Photographs of actor Tsai Chin in Dolores's London showroom in 1959 show her modelling similarly constructed hats.","physicalDescription":"Lightweight nylon or horsehair mesh hat covered in curls of lacquered raffia.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Dolores","id":"AUTH404026"},"association":{"text":"milliners","id":"AAT25356"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"raffia","id":"AAT14051"}],"techniques":[{"text":"millinery","id":"x39135"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"horsehair, lacquered raffia","categories":[{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Day wear","id":"THES49000"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2017KC8994"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES326387"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hat","id":"AAT46106"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"based in Marylebone"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1959","earliest":"1954-01-01","latest":"1963-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Photographs of the actor Tsai Chin modelling hats in Dolores’s London salon in 1959 show her wearing very similarly constructed hats to this.
