The gymslip is a dress, made from navy blue wool. It is high-waisted and loose-fitting, with a long pleated skirt. The skirt is unlined, but the bodice is lined with grey cotton. On the right side of the chest is applied a navy blue patch showing a cursive capital 'P' in woven white wool. Above it, on the right shoulder strap, are two silk ribbon chevrons, one white and one pale blue. The straps have been altered to make them shorter. Halfway down the skirt, at hip level on the right and left sides, there is a large loop.\r\n\r\nThe round cap is of black wool. In the centre of its front is a large patch showing a crest, the coat of arms of the county of Essex flanked by two tall trees, above which are the initials 'PHS'. The crown is pleated, descending to an upturned brim to which it is fastend at both sides of the head by a triangular tab and a round button. The inside is lined with white cotton. Handwritten in ink on its rim is the name 'Iris D. Jarvis'.\n\nThere is also a hat ribbon of black silk, with an applied coat of arms, also of silk, and a pre-tied bow.
