It was probably in the mid-1950s, when I was about nine or ten years old, and would have been part of a process of beginning to connect with the world beyond the confines of my refugee parents' home. I clearly remember being very disappointed in the game because it needed several players and I only had one real friend, it was very 'male' and was the first time I was aware of my lack of interest in winning anything. I kept it because of the pleasing design and because it was something that I had acquired myself.\r\n\r\nAlmost everything we ate was homemade and we never had any sweets other than the occasional small bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk, with its sections rationed out carefully.
