His body is wasted from years of extreme fasting, while his focused expression suggests the inner strength gained through meditation. The pedestal shows scenes of rural seclusion in low relief. Siddhartha eventually realised the value of a moderate path, the “Middle Way.” This early phase of his life fascinated King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Thailand (r. 1868–1910), who commissioned the sculpture. As a type, the fasting and emaciated Buddha is closely associated with the art of Gandhara (in present-day Pakistan). This work can be understood as part of the broader process by which artists and art historians in nineteenth-century Thailand engaged with the history of Buddhist art across Asia, when many copies of older works and adaptations of ancient iconographies were made.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze, cast","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2019MD0236"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"47F","id":"THES49793"},"free":"","case":"CA008","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bronze Sculpture","id":"AAT47333"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Thailand","id":"x30017"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Ger Eenens Collections The Netherlands","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"89","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"As per condition report carried out by R.T Leewenburg, 28th December 2015"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"77","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"As per condition report carried out by R.T Leewenburg, 28th December 2015"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"35","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"As per condition report carried out by R.T Leewenburg, 28th December 2015"},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"86","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Date of weight measurement 18th March 2013, as documented in the condition report carried out by R.T Leewenburg, 28th December 2015"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bronze sculpture in the Emaciated Buddha, Thailand, 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"pp. ix-x, 246-7.","free":"JANES, Glenn. <u>The Amasis Collection</u>.
